France deploys 70,000 police officers nationwide as President Emmanuel Macron faces growing unrest following violent protests, looting and mounting public anger over living costs. The unprecedented security operation aims to prevent renewed clashes after demonstrators and rioters caused widespread disruption across several French cities last weekend.
French authorities mobilised approximately 70,000 police officers and gendarmes on Saturday, October 24, adding 10,000 personnel compared with the previous week. Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez warned that officials would respond firmly to violence, looting and social media calls encouraging further disorder.
Meanwhile, protests have spread beyond student grievances over school conditions, reflecting broader frustration with rising living expenses, fuel prices and strained public services. Demonstrators gathered in Paris, Marseille and other cities, while authorities restricted marches and increased security around vulnerable locations.
In Paris, several major cultural attractions closed temporarily, shops boarded up their windows, and more than 20 metro stations shut amid heightened security concerns. Police deployed tear gas and water cannon against violent groups as clashes erupted following demonstrations that had largely remained peaceful earlier.
The Interior Ministry estimated that approximately 410,000 people participated in Saturday’s nationwide protests, although trade unions claimed the actual turnout was considerably higher. Authorities also reported arrests during confrontations, while businesses continued assessing damage from previous incidents.
Macron now faces mounting pressure to address public dissatisfaction while restoring confidence in his government’s ability to maintain order. His administration has struggled to contain the crisis, which arrives months before France’s next presidential election.
Despite the massive security deployment, tensions remain high as protesters demand meaningful government action on living costs, education and public services. France’s unfolding unrest highlights growing political challenges confronting Macron as authorities work to prevent further violence.
