Five French soldiers have been confirmed dead following an avalanche at the Alps.

The soldiers were undergoing a training exercise near the Valfrejus region, an area near the Italian border when the avalanche came down.

50 soldiers were reportedly involved in the training exercise and rescue efforts have begun.
