FIFA said on Thursday that its Council will review the withdrawn FIFA Forward Enterprise investment proposal.
The announcement followed criticism from Denmark’s football chief Jesper Moller. He had accused FIFA of failing to answer what he called “critical questions” about the scrapped plan.
FIFA President Gianni Infantino launched the proposal to sell commercial stakes in FIFA tournaments to outside investors. The plan included a proposed 20% stake in the World Cup and other FIFA events.
“FIFA Standing Committees advise and assist the FIFA Council in their respective fields in line with FIFA’s Statutes and Governance Regulations,” FIFA told Reuters in a statement.
“As previously communicated, a review of the withdrawn FIFA Forward Enterprise proposal will be presented to the FIFA Council.”
The FIFA Council has 37 members. It includes Infantino, eight vice-presidents and 28 members elected by FIFA’s member associations.
The investment plan drew criticism from several parts of world football. UEFA, the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) and CONCACAF called for changes to FIFA’s leadership structure.
The dispute also led to discussions about a possible no-confidence vote against Infantino.
Several European football associations have since withdrawn their support for Infantino’s re-election bid. Greek Football Association President Makis Gagatsis and former Germany national team director Oliver Bierhoff also backed UEFA’s call for changes to FIFA’s leadership on Tuesday.
However, sources familiar with the discussions told Reuters that Infantino still has enough support to secure another term. His opponents are therefore considering a strategy focused on limiting his powers.
The FIFA presidential election will take place on March 18, 2027, in Rabat, Morocco. Infantino will seek a fourth term as FIFA president.
