Nigerian rapper Erhiga Agarivbie, popularly known as Erigga, has sparked debate on X after praising musicians who did not come from wealthy families and had to work for their earnings, prompting a fiery response from Afrobeats star David Adeleke, aka Davido.
Erigga, in a tweet late Tuesday, wrote on his X handle: “Shoutout to all the musicians who don’t come from family money and had to grind for every single dollar they earn.”
Davido, who comes from a wealthy family, reacted to the post by quoting it and arguing that musicians from privileged backgrounds also deserve recognition for building successful careers through their own efforts.
Tweeting on Wednesday night, Davido wrote: “No be we say make your pops no guard o. Shoutout to the ones that came from family money and still grind to the top.”
The ‘Omo Baba Olowo’ crooner later described Erigga’s post as “useless motivation,” while referring to the rapper as an “imbecile.”
The exchange has since generated mixed reactions on X, with about 35,000 posts linked to the debate.
Some users defended Erigga, arguing that his post was simply a celebration of musicians who achieved success without financial privilege.
One X user, Moses5_a, wrote: “This tweet is so harmless. I don’t know why people are crying over it. He clearly wasn’t shading anyone, but somehow someone got offended. If you follow Erigga way back from 2020, you will know he’s all about motivation.”
However, others interpreted the rapper’s post as a subtle dig at Davido because of his wealthy family background.

Another user, Shandymoney, confronted Erigga, saying: “Kuku mention Davido.”
Meanwhile, CrystalReignz defended Davido, writing: “Give them back to back, nobody has the right to discredit your effort.”
Mautiin01 questioned whether Erigga had actually directed the post at Davido, asking: “But how you take know say na you he Dey follow talk? You catch sub.”
