Edo/Ondo Elections: No Mask, No Voting, Says INEC

The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, has said during the Presidential Task Force briefing on Covid-19 in Abuja that voters without their face masks will be prevented from voting during the coming Ondo and Edo Gubernatorial Elections.

“Voters without facemask would not be allowed to vote on the election. We urged the voters to cooperate with our officials and the security agents at the polling centres. This requirement is part of measures to combat the spread of Coronavirus pandemicย  during and after the October 10 election in Ondo state,” INEC Chairman said.

Prof. Mahmood Yakubu however warned that branded masks would not be allowed during the voting exercise. He also said that infrared thermometers and hand sanitizers would be available at all polling units during the election. He also mentioned that physical distancing would be applied during the voting exercise, in order to curb the spread of the Coronavirus.

Voters were also warned not to touch surfaces and lean on walls, stating that such acts are highly prohibited. The INEC Chairman also said that electronic voting cannot be used during the Ondo/Edo Gubernatorial elections, since the law guiding elections in Nigeria does not make provisions for that.
