ECOWAS Suspends Mali Over President Keita’s Detention

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has published its decision in a statement over the arrest of President Ibrahim Boubakar Keita and the Prime Minister Boubou Cisse by the Malian military.

This decision includes suspending Mali from ECOWAS and also stating all its members should close their land and air borders to Mali.

ECOWAS also promised to meet out sanctions against โ€œall the putschists and their partners and collaboratorsโ€. The statement further reads, “Also all financial flows between its fifteen members and Mali will be suspended.”

President’s Keita detention by the military was followed by a series of protests and unrest in Mali over corruption, the mismanagement of the economy and the worsening security situation with jihadist.
