DONALD TRUMP: TWO YEARS SINCE HIS HISTORIC ELECTION VICTORY FOR SECOND PRESIDENTIAL TERM

Donald Trump’s second-term election took place on November 5, 2024, when voters returned the Republican candidate to the White House. Two years later, the result remains a defining moment in United States politics, reshaping Washington’s leadership and national political conversations.

Trump defeated Democratic candidate Kamala Harris after a closely watched campaign focused on immigration, the economy, abortion rights, and democracy. His victory secured another four-year term, making him the second president in American history to serve two separate, nonconsecutive terms.

The first was Grover Cleveland, who served as president from 1885 to 1889 and again from 1893 to 1897 later. Trump occupied the White House between 2017 and 2021, before losing his reelection campaign to Democrat Joe Biden in 2020.

His 2024 campaign centred on promises to tighten border controls, lower living costs, expand energy production, and reshape federal government. Meanwhile, Harris entered the race after Biden ended his reelection campaign in July, amid concerns about his age and performance.

She sought to become the first woman elected president, while presenting herself as a continuation of the Biden administration’s policies. However, Trump won several battleground states and improved his performance among key voter groups compared with the previous presidential election.

The Republican also secured a nationwide popular-vote victory, becoming the first Republican presidential candidate to achieve that feat since 2004. The party’s congressional position was strengthened as Republicans retained House control and won a Senate majority that year in Washington.

Donald Trump’s second-term election delivered unified Republican control of the federal government when his new administration began in January 2025. His return brought policy changes, executive orders, cabinet appointments, and renewed debates over immigration, trade, foreign affairs, and federal institutions.

Supporters celebrated the result as a mandate for change, while critics warned about threats to democratic norms and public institutions. Two years after election night, the campaign’s promises and the administration’s decisions continue to shape political debate across the country.

The anniversary offers an opportunity to revisit the election, assess its consequences, and consider how its outcome continues influencing America.
