British-Nigerian rapper Dave has spoken about Nigeria’s hardship, claiming the West is dividing the country. He also expressed concern about the pressure on Nigerians and thanked fans who attended his Lagos concert despite the challenges they faced.
The rapper spoke on October 17 during the final night of his ‘The Boy Who Played The Harp Tour’ at the Wole Soyinka Centre for Culture and Creative Arts, formerly the National Theatre, in Lagos.
Dave speaks on Nigeria’s struggles
“This is a place that is very close to my heart. Nigeria is a country that has faced so many hardships. So so so many hardships. A country that is united, a country that is being divided,” he said.
“A country that is being divided by the West every single day. The pressure they put on Nigeria…the pressure the government puts on the people…all the struggles you guys faced, you don’t understand how much it means to me that you guys are in this building today. I know that it was not easy for anyone who has decided to be here, but I appreciate you guys.”
Dave’s remarks came as he wrapped up his 257-day global tour with two headline performances in Lagos on October 16 and 17. The shows marked his first performances in Nigeria.
Born David Orobosa Michael Omoregie, Dave has emerged as one of British rap’s leading voices. He is known for his intricate lyrics and storytelling, often drawing on personal experiences.
Burna Boy, Oxlade join Dave on stage
The final night also featured appearances by some of Nigeria’s biggest music stars.
Burna Boy joined Dave for ‘Location’, while Oxlade appeared for ‘Intoxicated ’. Fast-rising Nigerian artiste Zaylevelten also took the stage, giving the show a strong local presence.
Dave opened the performance at 10:18 pm with ‘History’ as the stage turned golden. He then delivered a set that brought his global tour to a close in Lagos.
