Nigerian film director and photographer, Dammy Twitch, has opened up about the challenges he faced convincing his mother to support his decision to pursue a career in the creative industry.
Speaking during an interview with Chude Jideonwo, Dammy Twitch revealed that while his father never opposed his ambitions, his mother struggled to accept his choice of photography and filmmaking over a more traditional profession.
At the time, he admitted he did not understand her concerns and often felt frustrated by her resistance.
“I’ll just be crying. I’ll be in my friend’s place asking, ‘Why is my mom doing this?’” he recalled.
As he grew older, however, he began to appreciate her perspective. According to him, she had invested years into his education and hoped to see him build a career related to what he studied in school.
The turning point came when his creative work started generating income. Dammy Twitch explained that sending money to his mother from his earnings helped convince her that his career was serious and sustainable.
He added that her confidence grew even more after he began working with Afrobeats superstar Davido. According to the filmmaker, a video call with the singer reassured his mother about the opportunities available in the entertainment industry.
“There’s no parent that will see Davido on a video call and not believe your career more,” he said.
Dammy Twitch also recalled travelling extensively with Davido during the singer’s famous 30 Billion Tour. The experience took him across numerous countries and exposed him to international opportunities that further validated his career choice.
