Madonna has returned to peak form with “Confessions II,” a dance-focused album that critics describe as her best work in two decades. The 16-track project reunites her with producer Stuart Price, the creative partner behind her acclaimed 2005 album, Confessions on a Dance Floor.
The album is Madonna’s first in seven years. It follows the same continuous DJ mix style that made its predecessor a fan favourite. House, techno and electronic pop blend into a cohesive listening experience built around freedom and reinvention.
“Sometimes I like to just hide in the shadows,” Madonna says on the opening track, “I Feel So Free.” “Create a new persona. A different identity. I can be whoever I want to be.”
A focused sound and standout moments
Unlike some of her recent albums, Confessions II maintains a clear musical identity from start to finish. Tracks such as “Bring Your Love,” “Everything”, and “Love Sensation” highlight Price’s polished production without relying on current pop trends.
“Danceteria” stands out as the album’s centrepiece. In the song, Madonna looks back on her early days in New York’s club scene. She recalls the people and places that helped launch her career while celebrating the culture that shaped her music.
Personal songs close the album
The final part of the album shifts from the dance floor to more personal stories.
On “Fragile,” Madonna honours her late brother, Christopher Ciccone. She sings, “Late last night I was fast asleep, you came to me in a dream. You said, ‘Don’t forget about me, don’t forget to be happy’ / So I hope you found a higher ground.”
Another emotional moment comes on “The Test,” a duet with her daughter, Lourdes “Lola” Leon. Madonna reflects on motherhood, singing, “I tried to put you on a pedestal. I didn’t think of how it could disturb or how it hurt / I wish I knew the pain I’ve caused.”
Leon replies, “I trace the line of what you have sewn / Keep my own design / Make it a landscape, make it alive.”
While some critics believe the album could have been shorter, Confessions II succeeds by balancing energetic dance music with emotional reflection. The result is Madonna’s most complete and compelling album in decades.
