Christopher Abbott says his reveal as Professor X at D23 was a “bit of a dream and a nightmare” because “a lot of people there didn’t know who I was.”
The “Girls” and “East of Eden” star will play the iconic Marvel character in the upcoming “X-Men” reboot. Marvel plans to release the film in May 2028.
Abbott recalls D23 reveal
Speaking to New York Magazine at the Russian and Turkish Baths in New York City, Abbott recalled his experience walking onto the D23 stage.
“I think I started walking out pretty enthusiastically, and then I kind of felt like a lot of people there didn’t know who I was, so then my energy shifted within the split second,” Abbott said. “I was a little bit more humble about it.”
Marvel revealed Abbott as Professor X alongside Inde Navarrette as Rogue and Maya Boyd as Storm. His “Girls” co-star Adam Driver will play the villainous Mr Sinister.
The studio had previously announced Sadie Sink as Jean Grey, Kit Connor as Cyclops and Samara Weaving as Emma Frost.
‘A bit of a dream and a nightmare’
Abbott said he initially expected a stronger reaction from the crowd.
“I almost did a fist pump when I walked out, and then I felt like the applause was muted,” Abbott continued. “So I was like, ‘I’m just going to walk out and nod.’ It feels almost like a video game, or a dream. Not like a good dream. It’s a bit of both, a bit of a dream and a nightmare.”
The upcoming film will reboot Marvel’s X-Men after 2019’s “Dark Phoenix”, the final X-Men movie released by Fox.
“Dark Phoenix” featured James McAvoy as Professor X. The cast also included Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, Nicholas Hoult, Sophie Turner, Tye Sheridan, Alexandra Shipp, Evan Peters and Kodi Smit-McPhee.
