Media mogul and late-night host Byron Allen has donated $100,000 to the GoFundMe set up for the family of Nolan Xavier Wells, the 18-year-old whose death has raised questions after he disappeared during a boating trip to Mississippi’s Horn Island over the July 4 holiday.
Allen shared a message of support for the grieving family.
“My prayers are with this beautiful family during this very difficult time. I hope that Nolan Wells‘ loved ones, and humanity, get all the answers that we deserve.”
Fundraiser Nears Goal
Wells’ family launched the fundraiser earlier this week to help cover expenses. His mother, Christine Wonsley, is among the beneficiaries.
Comedian Lil Rel Howrey and Auburn football quarterback Deuce Knight have also contributed to the campaign. As of Saturday afternoon, the GoFundMe had raised $574,719 toward its $750,000 goal.
The fundraiser page highlights the impact Wells had on those around him.
“Our hearts are broken beyond words. Nolan Xavier Wells was a beloved son, grandson, brother, friend and teammate whose life touched so many people. His smile, kind heart, and love for others left a lasting impact on everyone who knew him.”
The statement also thanked the many people who joined the search effort.
“After an extensive search involving countless volunteers from the United Cajun Navy, first responders, local law enforcement, the United States Coast Guard, and organisations from across the region, our worst fears became reality. While no words can ease the pain of this unimaginable loss, we are deeply grateful for every person who searched, prayed, shared his story, and stood beside our family during these difficult days.”
Tyler Perry Steps In
Attorney Ben Crump announced on Friday that Tyler Perry will pay for Wells’ funeral expenses. Former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick also plans to fund an independent autopsy. Rev. Al Sharpton will lead the funeral service.
In an Instagram post, Perry expressed his hope that the family finds answers.
“As a son of the South and a person who to this day questions the death of my nephew in a Louisiana prison, and as an advocate who has been fighting for years to get answers for Marcia Williams about what happened to her son Terrance in Florida, I know what it’s like not to have the answers that loved ones so desperately need. The agony is debilitating. I hope that Nolan’s parents and all who knew and loved him get to the truth of what happened in Mississippi.”
Investigation Continues
According to Ben Crump’s website, Wells travelled by boat to Horn Island with friends on July 4. Authorities say he was last seen on the island around 3 p.m. and did not return with the group.
Search teams looked for him for two days before a U.S. park ranger found a body on July 6. Wells’ family later confirmed his death.
Authorities continue to investigate the case. They have not yet determined the cause of death.
