Burkina Faso inaugurated its first gold refinery on September 28, marking a major development for the country’s growing gold industry. President Ibrahim Traoré officially opened RAFFINOR-BF during a ceremony in Ouagadougou, highlighting efforts to strengthen domestic mineral processing capacity nationwide.
The new facility represents an investment exceeding 11 billion CFA francs, according to Burkina Faso’s official government information service today. RAFFINOR-BF will initially refine 164 tonnes of gold annually, while authorities project eventual capacity reaching 515 tonnes in future phases.
Its establishment allows Burkina Faso to process more of its gold domestically instead of sending valuable raw materials abroad directly. Officials say the refinery will help the country retain greater value from mineral resources and strengthen control over production locally.
The facility features automated technologies designed to meet industrial standards and support large-scale gold refining operations within Burkina Faso itself. Additionally, RAFFINOR-BF includes secure storage facilities, an analysis laboratory, a jewellery unit, and a foundry for processing activities there today.
The project also seeks to integrate industrial and artisanal gold production into a more structured national value chain domestically nationwide. Government officials presented the refinery as part of broader efforts to increase economic sovereignty through domestic processing of natural resources.
During the inauguration, Traoré said Burkina Faso wanted to move beyond simply extracting minerals and exporting raw materials overseas today. He emphasized the importance of transforming, controlling, valuing, and certifying Burkinabè gold within the country’s national borders locally nationwide today.
Meanwhile, authorities hope RAFFINOR-BF can eventually position Burkina Faso as a regional reference point for gold refining across Africa region. The refinery could also create opportunities for technical skills development as workers gain experience operating advanced processing and laboratory equipment.
For the country’s mining sector, the project marks a shift toward capturing more economic value before gold reaches international markets. Burkina Faso’s first gold refinery therefore represents an important industrial development within the nation’s expanding efforts to manage mineral resources.
As RAFFINOR-BF begins operations, officials will focus on increasing capacity while strengthening systems surrounding gold processing, certification, storage, and exports. The inauguration places Burkina Faso’s gold refining ambitions firmly on the regional agenda as the country pursues greater domestic processing.
