A deadly explosion ripped through a mosque in Maiduguri, the Borno state capital today. Twenty two people have been reported dead in attacks which were said to have been carried out by two female bombers.

Today’s attack is largely believed to have been carried out by Boko Haram, a fundamentalist sect the Nigerian Army has been battling to bring under control for over three years. Despite insistence by the government that the insurgents have been brought under control, hit and run attacks like this increasingly makes nonsense of the government’s claims.

One of the suicide bombers detonated explosives inside the mosque while the other detonated hers as a crowd tried to apprehend her outside the busy mosque.
