Due to the ongoing controversy surrounding a Lagos corps member, popular Afrobeat artist Ayra Starr has come under fire for a recent post that many have called inappropriate.

In a recent development, a serving National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member in Lagos State, identified as Uguamaye, has come under scrutiny following a viral video in which she criticized President Bola Tinubu’s administration over escalating inflation and the resulting hardships faced by corps members.

In the video, Uguamaye expressed her dissatisfaction with the current economic situation, highlighting the challenges that rising inflation poses to corps members who rely on their monthly allowances to meet basic needs. She emphasized that the increasing cost of living has made it difficult for many to sustain themselves during their service year.

Following the video’s circulation, Uguamaye reported receiving threatening messages, allegedly from NYSC officials, pressuring her to delete the content.

She expressed concerns for her safety, stating, “Deleting this content is of no use because they already know me. However, deleting it means whatever they do to me, nobody would know.”

This incident has sparked discussions about the freedom of expression for corps members and the economic challenges they face. Ayra Starr took to X to share two stylish photos of herself in a black gown, expecting admiration from fans.

The post was criticised, though, by many who said she was disregarding important national issues, including the suffering of a NYSC member who recently criticised President Bola Tinubu’s administration for inflation and the struggles encountered by corps members.

The corps member’s widely shared video, in which she also made fun of Lagos’ purportedly foul odour, caused indignation, and rumours circulated that NYSC officials were threatening her.

Ayra Starr’s tweet was criticised online for being tone deaf during this contentious discussion.

One user, @Obaji_esq, wrote, “Can’t you see that today is about calling out bad government? Can’t you use your platform for once and talk about the real issues? Must you post your face and body?”
