Nigerian comedian and actor AY Makun has apologised to fans after missing his scheduled show in Cardiff, United Kingdom, blaming the organisers for failing to pay his outstanding performance fees.
Makun was billed to perform at ‘AY Live: Single and Not Searching’ at Valegate Retail Park in Cardiff on Sunday. However, videos circulating online showed angry attendees complaining about his absence. Some left the venue without seeing the show.
An X user identified as Ekybabe criticised the comedian for keeping fans waiting for hours.
“Scam in 2026! I am here live in Cardiff, and you @AYCOMEDIAN DID NOT SHOW UP! What a huge shame and a disgrace on your brand. You kept us out of our homes from 4 pm till after 10 pm; hype men, DJs, MCs and upcoming artistes kept coming on stage to deceive us,” the user wrote.
Makun explains absence from Cardiff show
In a post via X, Makun said his team was ready to perform but had an unresolved payment dispute with the organisers.
He said the outstanding balance had been due since September. According to him, his team raised the issue before travelling and received assurances that the organisers would pay before their arrival.
The comedian added that a similar experience at a previous show, in which his team remained unpaid, prompted him to insist on payment before performing again.
Efforts to resolve the dispute continued into the night. By the time both parties reached an agreement, most attendees had left the venue.
“I’m so sorry you didn’t get the show you paid for. You fulfilled your commitment, and you deserved better. My team and I were ready to perform. However, the outstanding balance for our performance had been due since September but remained unpaid. Before travelling, we raised the issue and were assured that the payment would be made before we arrived at the venue,” he said.
AY calls for refunds
Makun urged the organisers to explain their actions. He also stressed that event promoters must fulfil their obligations to performers and audiences.
The comedian said he would not deliberately disappoint his supporters after spending more than two decades building his brand.
He appealed to fans not to let the incident affect their perception of his entire UK tour.
“I am calling on the organisers and our UK tour management to provide a clear resolution for ticket holders, including refund information. Verified updates will be shared through my official channels,” he wrote.
