Nobel Peace Prize winner and the leader of the Opposition Party in Myanmar, National League for democracy has won a seat in Parliament following the counting of votes. Kyi’s NLD look set to claim a landslide victory which will give them a majority in the parliament.
NLD is cruising to victory in the polls, having won 135 of the 151 seats declared so far in Myanmar’s lower house as well as 29 of 33 seats in the Upper House.
Aung Suu Kyi has called for a meeting with Myanmar’s President and urged him to respect the people’s wishes as well as implement them.
Myanmar’s ruling party, Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP), is backed by the military and many have expressed fears that the party would not hand over power in a repeat of the 1990 elections.
However, the USDP’s body language and their recent concessions point to the fact that they are finally willing to give democracy a chance in Myanmar.
