Afenifere Leader Reuben Fasoranti Dies at 100

Afenifere leader Reuben Fasoranti has died at 100, with Ondo State Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa announcing the elder statesman’s passing Tuesday. Governor Aiyedatiwa confirmed the death in a statement, describing Fasoranti as a respected patriarch whose life reflected integrity and selfless service.

The announcement marks the end of a remarkable life dedicated to education, political activism, Yoruba interests and Nigeria’s democratic development. Born on May 11, 1926, in Uso, Ondo State, Fasoranti celebrated his centenary birthday earlier this year.

Throughout his career, Fasoranti emerged as a prominent educationist, politician and pro-democracy advocate who championed justice and accountable leadership. He served as Ondo State Commissioner for Finance between 1979 and 1983 under the Unity Party of Nigeria administration.

His political journey reflected the influence of nationalist leader Obafemi Awolowo, whose political philosophy shaped Fasoranti’s commitment to progressive governance. As Afenifere’s national leader, Fasoranti became an influential voice on Yoruba affairs, national unity, constitutional governance and democratic accountability.

Governor Aiyedatiwa praised Fasoranti’s contributions to Ondo State, Yorubaland and Nigeria, saying his wisdom and guidance would remain greatly missed. Fasoranti also endured personal tragedy in 2019 when gunmen killed his daughter, Funke Olakunrin, along the Ondo-Ore Expressway.

Despite these challenges, he maintained his public profile as an elder statesman whose opinions carried considerable weight in national discussions. Fasoranti’s death leaves a significant legacy in education, political leadership and Yoruba socio-political advocacy, with tributes expected from leaders nationwide.
