This is to inform you of the 2016 Step-Down Obstetric Fistula Project organized by Project Asha in conjunction with Access Bank. The purpose of this intervention is to create a positive impact on the lives of women suffering from Obstetric Fistula in the rural areas of Nigeria. It is expected that at the end of this intervention, 3000 members of the rural communities would have been impacted directly, with a multiplier effect expected to reach entire communities.
The intervention features four interactive discussions in strategic areas of the country, namely: Yaba, Lagos State, Ughelli, Delta State, Zaria and Kaduna in Kaduna State.
There is an urgent need for action on Obstetric Fistula because there are millions of women suffering from the disease worldwide. Statistics show that fewer than 6 in 10 women in developing countries give birth without any trained professional such as a midwife or a doctor and this increases the chances of contacting the disease. The encouraging fact is that Obstetric Fistula is both preventable and treatable. What is needed to combat it is a concerted effort from all stakeholders to confront this disease from strategic points.
The project is to be attended by top community leaders, medical professionals and other health experts, as well as members of the communities. Different salient issues will be deliberated upon, with the expectation that attendees at the event will be fully enlightened and empowered to further spread information about the disorder.

Project Asha is a Non-profit organization whose main functions include offering advocacy, counselling, psychological and therapeutic support services for vulnerable women, girls and people with disabilities, who are victims of abuse, disenfranchisement and marginalization.
