When I work on my music, I tell myself I need to step out of my comfort zone and try new sounds. I tell myself that for a man who has performed Fuji, rapped in both English and Yoruba, and sang Yoruba highlife, I need to do something that years from now, my daughters will be able to look back and say “our dad was not a flash in the pan. He pushed himself and gave his all to give us a good education, feed us, and put a roof over our heads.
Everything I do, I do it for these girls, Fatimah and Hafusa, knowing that even if the world doesn’t applaud or celebrate me, the smiles on the faces of these beautiful girls, and that of their mother would fill my heart with unlimited joy.
Today as the world celebrates Children’s day, I want to wish my daughters who have remained my greatest source of inspiration and joy, Happy Children’s Day. But more importantly, I want to take a moment to be in solidarity with the mothers and fathers of the over two hundred girls who were kidnapped from their school in Chibok and others across the world who are in the hands of terrorists.
I know that I might never appreciate the pain in the heart of these parents, but as a father to two lovely daughters, I don’t know what I would have done if someone had taken them from me. One day, and very soon, we will bring back our girls.
Happy Children to all the wonderful kids that make this world a better place for us parents.
