Mayulu, Godts strike as PSG beat Lyon to top Ligue 1

Senny Mayulu and Mika Godts scored superb second-half goals as Paris Saint-Germain moved to the top of Ligue 1 with a hard-fought 2-0 victory over Olympique Lyonnais on Monday.

PSG now have 17 points from eight games, one more than second-placed Rennes, while Lyon remain fifth with 14 points after missing the opportunity to claim the summit themselves.

The victory extended PSG’s winning run to eight matches across all competitions, underlining their impressive form this season.

The fixture coincided with the Ballon d’Or ceremony in London, where PSG had a record 10 players nominated for various awards.

After a stubborn first-half display from Lyon, Mayulu broke the deadlock 18 minutes from time. The 20-year-old received a pass from Godts on the edge of the box, took a touch and drilled a low shot into the left-hand corner.

The goal was Mayulu’s first since April and proved crucial as the hosts struggled to find a breakthrough against their visitors.

Godts then sealed the victory with his first goal for PSG since arriving from Ajax Amsterdam this season. The forward latched onto a long pass before firing home from the edge of the box to secure all three points.

Despite PSG’s eventual triumph, goalkeeper Matvey Safonov had to work hard in the first half. He produced a stunning save to deny Julien Duranville, ensuring the hosts remained in contention during a difficult opening period.

Meanwhile, PSG supporters paid tribute to midfielder Khvicha Kvaratskhelia before kick-off as he undergoes surgery in Qatar for a rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament in his knee.
