A-Q recounts how he survived a machete attack by 10 masked men in Ghana

Nigerian rapper Gilbert Bani, popularly known as A-Q, has recounted how 10 masked men armed with machetes attacked him during a walk in Accra, Ghana, leaving him injured and requiring surgery.

The ‘Who’s Really Rapping’ hitmaker disclosed the incident in an Instagram post on Thursday. He said the attackers surrounded him on five motorcycles in East Legon at around 10 pm on October 17.

According to A-Q, the riders tried to corner him while the other men swung machetes at him.

“On Saturday, 17 October, at around 10 pm, I was attacked while out on a walk in East Legon, Accra. About ten masked men on five motorcycles surrounded me. The riders tried to box me into a corner while the men on the back swung machetes at me,” he said.

A-Q undergoes surgery after attack

The rapper said he suffered several injuries, including a blow to his elbow that was meant for his head. He managed to escape across the road, where a passerby rescued him and rushed him to hospital.

“My elbow took a blow that was meant for my head. I managed to break away and run across the road, where a good Samaritan picked me up and rushed me to hospital. I was taken straight into surgery, and my injuries were treated.

“The attack has been reported to the Ghana Police Service and is being investigated. I am now in a safe place while the police work to establish who was behind it and why.

“To the stranger who stopped for me that night, and to the doctors and nurses who cared for me: thank you. To my friends, fans and well-wishers: please don’t worry, I am well by God’s grace. I ask that you don’t speculate about who was responsible or direct anger at anyone. Let the police do their work, and if you have any information, please share it with them.”

A-Q urged the public not to speculate about those responsible. He also appealed to anyone with useful information to contact the Ghana Police Service as it investigates the attack.

A-Q’s music career

The rapper began his career in 2001 after signing his first record deal with Big Leaf Records. He released his debut single, ‘(W)rap Nigeria’, in 2004.

He followed it with his first album, ‘Listen and Understand’, in 2005. A-Q later won the ‘Lyricist on the Roll’ award at the 13th edition of The Headies.
