FIFA has suspended Egypt coach Hossam Hassan and forward Mostafa Zico following criticism of refereeing after Argentina’s World Cup victory. The Egyptian Football Association announced the decisions Monday, confirming Hassan received a three-match ban while Zico received five matches.
Egypt’s team director Ibrahim Hassan, the coach’s twin brother, also received a three-match suspension over comments following the knockout defeat. Argentina defeated Egypt 3-2 in the round of sixteen after recovering from a two-goal deficit during a dramatic late comeback.
The Pharaohs had appeared close to a historic quarterfinal place before Argentina scored three times to turn the match around. Controversy surrounded a disallowed Zico goal and Egypt’s unsuccessful late appeal for a penalty when the score stood at 2-2.
Coach Hossam Hassan accused officials of unfair treatment and said refereeing decisions had cost Egypt a chance to progress further. Zico reportedly insulted French referee François Letexier during a post-match interview, prompting FIFA disciplinary action against the Egyptian forward.
FIFA refereeing chief Pierluigi Collina defended the officials, arguing that accusations of bias could expose referees and their families to threats. The Egyptian Football Association has requested explanations from FIFA’s disciplinary committee before deciding whether to challenge the sanctions through an appeal.
The suspensions could affect Egypt’s Africa Cup of Nations qualifying fixtures, including matches against Malawi scheduled for November this year. Hossam and Ibrahim Hassan may also miss Egypt’s first international-window fixture in March, depending on the suspension schedule and regulations.
Zico’s longer five-match ban could keep him unavailable for national-team duty until June, according to reports about the disciplinary decision. FIFA opened disciplinary proceedings in August after the Egyptian officials and player publicly criticised the World Cup match officiating.
Egypt’s football association continues reviewing its options and seeking clarification from FIFA about the penalties and their possible implications.
