Man City maintain perfect WSL start as Chelsea thrash Spurs

Manchester City maintained their perfect start to the Women’s Super League (WSL) season with a 3-2 victory over Brighton & Hove Albion on Sunday, while Chelsea strengthened their title challenge with a 6-2 demolition of Tottenham Hotspur.

City raced into a three-goal lead within 17 minutes through a brace from Bunny Shaw and a strike from Niamh Charles.

However, Brighton mounted a spirited comeback before half-time, with Olivia Garcia and Caitlin Hayes scoring to reduce the deficit to 3-2.

Neither side found the net after the break as City held on to claim their sixth consecutive league victory.

The result leaves City top of the standings with 18 points, two ahead of second-placed Chelsea, who delivered a dominant performance against Tottenham.

Chelsea hit Spurs for six

Lauren James and Ellie Carpenter both scored twice as Chelsea overwhelmed Tottenham 6-2 to maintain pressure on the leaders.

Spurs had conceded only twice while recording three wins and a draw in their opening four league matches. However, they have now shipped six goals in each of their last two WSL outings.

London City Lionesses retained third place after a 2-1 home win over Everton, while Manchester United climbed to fifth with a 3-1 victory against bottom-placed Charlton Athletic.

United have 10 points, level with Tottenham but behind them on goal difference.

Elsewhere, Aston Villa secured their first league win of the season by coming from behind to beat Liverpool 2-1. The victory lifted Villa to 10th place, above Crystal Palace on goal difference after Palace suffered a 1-0 home defeat to West Ham United.

Arsenal’s struggle continues

Arsenal’s difficult start continued on Saturday as they drew 1-1 with Birmingham City at the Emirates Stadium.

The Gunners fell behind before recovering to earn a point, but their supporters greeted the final whistle with boos.

The draw extended Arsenal’s winless run to five WSL matches, their worst such streak in the competition’s history.
