Cross Okonkwo, former Big Brother Naija housemate, says a street beggar ripped the moulding from his car’s windscreen while he was stuck in traffic in Ikate, Lekki, Lagos.
Cross recounted the incident in a series of videos he posted on Instagram on Tuesday.
The reality star said several beggars approached his window while he sat in traffic. He said they spoke to him, but he did not turn them away.
Moments later, one of them pulled the weatherstripping around his windscreen and fled.
Cross shared footage showing the moulding ripped from the vehicle.
He said he chased the suspect but could not catch him.
“He ran so fast,” he said.
Cross also questioned why authorities allow people he described as dangerous to operate on the streets.
“Nigeria, you’re not safe in your own country,” he said.
Cross searches for suspect
Cross said other youths gathered around him after the incident. He then brought some men to help search for the suspect.
He also spoke with a group of men, commonly called agberos. According to Cross, they asked him to leave his phone number in case they saw the man again.
The reality star said he later spotted the suspect across the road while returning to the group.
However, the man recognised him and ran away.
“I feel so pained. My body is boiling,” he said.
Similar incident reported
The incident comes after another reported case in Lekki this week.
A woman driving a Mercedes-Benz around 9 pm said a three-man gang ripped a windshield chrome strip from her car while traffic stood still. She valued the strip at ₦300,000.
She said the group also took phones and other belongings from motorists behind her.
The woman said it was the second time she had faced a similar incident. She recalled that someone previously stole the logo from her G-Wagon in the same way.
Police warned about Lekki beggars
Reports of people posing as beggars and attacking motorists in the Lekki and Ajah corridor date back several years.
In August 2021, the Lagos State Police Command announced a 24-hour stop-and-search operation in the area. The move followed reports of robbers disguising themselves as beggars.
Adekunle Ajisebutu, the command’s spokesperson at the time, said police knew about the security challenges linked to such incidents.
The Lagos State Government later said it had formed a special team with the police to tackle street begging.
