Omotunde Adebowale, the actress and media personality better known as Lolo 1, has recalled how postpartum depression left her with an urge to throw her first child out of the window.
The 49-year-old actress spoke about the experience during a recent edition of News Central’s Jasiri show.
Lolo 1 recalls difficult period.
Lolo 1 said caring for her first child became overwhelming because the baby cried constantly.
She said she had never seen an infant cry as much as her daughter did.
“When I had my daughter, she was my firstborn, and she was an extremely crying baby. Even till now, I do not think I have seen anyone’s baby cry as much as she cried,” she said.
The actress said the constant crying became difficult for her to handle.
She recalled that she would sometimes take a stool and sit outside the door. She hoped her daughter would stop crying when she was no longer in sight.
“I used to have this uncontrollable urge to throw her out of the wíndow. When I am at home with her, I would take a stool and sit outside the door, that maybe because she was seeing me.”
Her sister offered support.
Lolo 1 said her sister stayed with her for three months to help care for both her and the baby.
She recalled how difficult it became when her sister eventually returned home.
“When my sister stayed with me for three months to care for the baby and me, the day she went back home, by the evening of that day, I took all my things to her husband’s house, because I could not stay with the child,” she added.
Lolo 1 said postpartum depression was not a term she knew at the time.
She said she now looks back with gratitude for the support she received from her sister and mother during that period.
“But at that time, I do not think we had a name. Now that you are giving us these descriptions, I just used like go back and say thank God that I have the support of my sister, my mum at that time.”
