The United Kingdom led this year’s International Emmy nominations with 14 nods, while Canada’s “Heated Rivalry” missed out despite its strong international reception and eligibility for the awards.
Brazil followed the UK with nine nominations, while Spain received five. The UK’s nominees include Disney+’s “A Thousand Blows” in Drama Series and Netflix’s “Man vs. Baby” in Comedy.
‘Heated Rivalry’ misses out
Bell Media/Crave submitted “Heated Rivalry” for consideration, a Bell Media representative confirmed. However, the series did not make the list of nominees announced on Wednesday.
The Canadian series became a major hit earlier this year in Canada and the United States. HBO Max aired the show in the US.
However, “Heated Rivalry” could not compete for the Television Academy’s Primetime Emmy Awards. The series came from a Canadian commission and had no US production partners.
That made it eligible for an International Emmy nomination. However, the series did not secure a place among this year’s nominees.
In Drama Series, “A Thousand Blows” will compete against France’s “Carême,” Argentina’s “Menem” and India’s “Real Kashmir Football Club.”
The Comedy category features Argentina’s “División Palermo Season 2 [Community Squad],” the UK’s “Man vs. Baby,” Spain’s “Old Dog, New Tricks” and India’s “Vir Das: Fool Volume.”
UK dominates across categories
The UK also picked up nominations in Arts Programming, Current Affairs, Documentary, Kids: Animation, Kids: Factual & Entertainment, Kids: Live-Action, News, Non-Scripted Entertainment and Sports Documentary.
Other nominated countries include Argentina, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Chile, China, France, Germany, India, Japan, Mexico, the Netherlands, Norway, the Philippines, Portugal, Qatar, Singapore, South Africa, South Korea, Spain and Türkiye.
The International Academy of Television Arts & Sciences announced 64 nominees across 16 categories, representing 22 countries.
“The International Emmy Awards are as competitive as ever, with an outstanding range of entries from around the world vying for a coveted nomination,” International Academy president and CEO Bruce L. Paisner said in a statement.
“We look forward to bringing the global television community together to celebrate these exceptional programs and performances.”
The nominees also include Brazil’s “Garota do Momento,” Türkiye’s “Leyla” and “Uzak Sehir [Far Away],” and Spain’s “Valle Salvaje — Season 2 [Wild Valley].”
