Colombia vs Nigeria U20 ended in heartbreak as Falconets suffered a 1-0 quarter-final defeat at FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup. Valerin Loboa scored Colombia’s decisive goal in the 92nd minute, ending Nigeria’s hopes of reaching the tournament semifinals in Poland.
The Falconets battled throughout the contest, creating opportunities but struggling to find the breakthrough against Colombia’s disciplined defensive structure today. Nigeria nearly opened scoring when Janet Akekoromowei struck the crossbar during a tense first half in Łódź, Poland on Sunday.
Goalkeeper Luisa Agudelo also denied Tumininu Adeshina, keeping Colombia level as both teams searched for attacking openings throughout the match. After halftime, Colombia created clearer chances, but Christiana Uzoma produced important saves to keep Nigeria still within reach of victory.
However, Nigeria’s challenge became harder when Kafayat Mafisere received a red card following a dangerous challenge after VAR review. Playing with ten players, the Falconets struggled to contain Colombia’s pressure during the closing stages of the quarter-final encounter in Poland.
Loboa then reacted quickly after her initial effort rebounded, finishing from close range to send Colombia into the semifinals. The defeat ended Nigeria’s campaign after an impressive knockout victory over England, where the Falconets secured a convincing 3-0 result.
Colombia vs Nigeria U20 ultimately produced another painful quarter-final exit for Nigeria, which last reached the semifinals back in 2014. Colombia now advances against either defending champions North Korea or Canada, while Nigeria returns home after another competitive tournament campaign.
