Adekanla Desalu, the Nigerian actor and filmmaker, has lamented losing $2,500 after clicking a fake Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) link.
In a video shared on Instagram, Desalu said he thought he was making a payment of N2,500. He said he later discovered that $2,500 had been taken from him.
“From ₦2,500 to $2,500 God abeg,” he captioned the post.
Desalu also warned Nigerians to be careful when opening links sent through text messages or emails.
“PSA please DO NOT click on any links you get via SMS or Email without double/triple checking it is LEGIT. You can’t be too careful.”
The FRSC had earlier disowned a viral message about road traffic violations. The message directed motorists to a website to pay fines.
In a statement on Wednesday, the corps described the message as fraudulent. It also warned the public against clicking on the attached link.
The alert followed concerns raised by a social media user. The user had received a text message about an alleged road safety violation.
FRSC said the messages and the link, “frscgov.top/ng”, were fraudulent. It said they were designed to impersonate the corps.
The corps said its official website is “frsc.gov.ng”. It urged motorists to use only its authorised digital platforms and communication channels.
Desalu was born in Lagos on November 7, 1980. He graduated from the University of Lagos with a bachelor’s degree in actuarial science.
