Ugo Ugochukwu F3 Champion Says He Is Proud of His Nigerian Roots

Nigerian-American racing driver Ugo Ugochukwu F3 champion celebrates his historic Formula 3 title with pride in his Nigerian heritage. The 19-year-old secured the 2026 FIA Formula 3 Drivers’ Championship at Madrid’s new Madring circuit on Sunday.

Ugochukwu finished second in the final Feature Race, securing enough points to defeat British rival Freddie Slater. Meanwhile, Finland’s Tuukka Taponen won the race, while Slater finished eighth after entering the weekend ahead.

The championship victory also made Ugochukwu the first American driver to win the modern FIA Formula 3 title. Following his breakthrough achievement, the young driver highlighted his strong connection with Nigeria and his family heritage. “I’m super proud of my Nigerian roots, on my mom’s side,” Ugochukwu said after winning the championship.

His mother, Oluchi Onweagba, is a Nigerian fashion model who won the inaugural Face of Africa competition in 1998. Ugochukwu also expressed pride in seeing supporters across Africa increasingly recognise his name and follow his racing journey.

The Campos Racing driver entered the final weekend fifteen points behind Slater before mounting a decisive comeback in Madrid. Strong qualifying performances gave Ugochukwu an advantage, while Slater struggled during crucial sessions across the weekend. His consistency ultimately delivered the championship during a tense final showdown between the two leading contenders.

For Ugo Ugochukwu F3 champion status represents another major step toward his long-term ambition of reaching Formula One. Formula 3 remains an important pathway toward Formula Two and eventually the world’s premier single-seater racing championship.

Ugochukwu’s success could inspire more young African motorsport enthusiasts to pursue competitive racing and believe bigger opportunities remain possible.
