Lionel Messi has announced his retirement from international football at the age of 39.
The Argentina captain decided after last month’s World Cup final in New York. Argentina lost 1-0 to Spain, making the match the final game of Messi’s international career.
Messi’s Argentina Career
Messi made his senior Argentina debut at the age of 18. He went on to become one of the most important players in the country’s history.
The forward played 207 games for Argentina. He also scored 125 goals for his country.
His biggest success came in 2022. Messi led Argentina to its third World Cup title that year.
The triumph was the crowning moment of his international career. It also ended years of disappointment with the national team.
Messi Explains His Decision
After the World Cup final, Messi took time to think about his future. He later confirmed that he would no longer play for Argentina.
“After the time that has passed since the final, and after giving it a lot of thought, I want to let everyone know that I am retiring from the national team,” Messi said on Instagram.
The Argentina star admitted that the decision was difficult. However, he said he believes the time has come to end his international career.
“It is a decision that hurts and still hurts deep down, but I understand that the time has come. I swear to you that I always gave it my all – not just in these last few years when we won everything, but before that too.
“I always fought and left everything on the field for this jersey, to bring you joy and make you feel proud to be Argentinian through football.”
A Painful Goodbye
Messi also spoke about his love for playing for Argentina. He said ending his time with the national team was a painful moment.
“Time is running short, chapters come to a close, and this one hurts me deeply. I love, have loved, and will always love being part of the national team.”
The 39-year-old also pointed to the young players coming through the Argentina system.
“I’ve given everything I had, I have nothing left to give and besides, some great young players are coming up who deserve to be here.”
Messi’s retirement brings an end to one of the greatest international careers in football history. His 207 appearances and 125 goals leave him as one of Argentina’s most decorated players.
