Anne Hathaway believes movies that kill dogs should automatically receive an R rating. The actress commented while promoting her new film, The End of Oak Street.
Hathaway spoke to Complex during the film’s press tour. She also addressed concerns about Starbuck, the dog featured in the movie’s trailer.
Hathaway on Dog Deaths in Movies
“I feel like movies that kill dogs should automatically be rated R,” Hathaway said. “Doesn’t matter if anybody curses, doesn’t matter if there’s violence, if a dog dies, R-rated… I think everybody’s so traumatised by ‘John Wick,’ because I’ve been seeing those [comments for our movie] like, ‘They better not kill the dog.’ I’m like, ‘Which movies are out there killing dogs that everybody’s scared that we’re just casually doing it in movies now?’”
The comments came after some viewers worried that Starbuck could die in the new film.
The dog belongs to the family at the centre of the story. Hathaway plays Denise, the family’s matriarch, alongside Ewan McGregor.
Hathaway also revealed that fans have directly asked her to reassure them about Starbuck’s fate.
“Somebody was like, can you just let the audiences know that, like, it’s all gonna be OK?” Hathaway added. “We break rules in this movie; that might not be one of them. Don’t worry.”
The End of Oak Street Story
The film follows a family facing a terrifying situation after their suburban street travels back in time millions of years.
Hathaway and McGregor play parents who must protect their family from dinosaurs and other dangers in the prehistoric world.
