A consortium involving Amazon co-founder Jeff Bezos has agreed to buy roughly 30% of Liverpool FC from Fenway Sports Group (FSG), valuing the Premier League club at about $6 billion.
Bezos Joins Liverpool Ownership
FSG announced the deal on Friday. Businessman Amit Bhatia and the Mittal Family Trusts lead the investment consortium, 1892 Holdings.
Facebook co-founder Eduardo Saverin and his wife, Elaine, also belong to the group.
The deal gives Bezos his first direct investment in a sports team. The Amazon co-founder ranks as the world’s third-richest person, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index.
Bezos has previously explored opportunities in the NFL. He notably held talks over a potential purchase of the Washington Commanders in 2023.
Bhatia to Become Vice Chairman
The deal still requires regulatory approval. Once regulators approve it, Bhatia will become Liverpool’s vice chairman and join the club’s expanded board.
Elaine Saverin and Bryan Baum of K5 Sports will also join the board.
The consortium plans to seek a controlling stake in Liverpool in the future, according to a person familiar with the matter. That move could lift the club’s valuation above $7 billion.
FSG, however, said it has no immediate plans to sell the Premier League club.
At $6 billion, Liverpool ranks among the world’s most valuable football clubs. Real Madrid currently holds a $7.7 billion valuation. Barcelona and Manchester United each stand at about $6.5 billion.
Liverpool’s Value Has Soared
FSG bought Liverpool for £300 million in 2010.
The club has enjoyed major success under the American ownership group. Liverpool won the Champions League in 2019 and the Premier League in 2020 and 2025.
Liverpool also ranked fifth in the Deloitte Football Money League. The club generated €836.1 million ($968 million) in revenue.
The redevelopment of Anfield and the addition of premium seating helped boost the club’s earnings.
Fans Raise Concerns
The deal has also sparked concern among some Liverpool supporters.
Peter Hooton, a season-ticket holder for around 35 years, said: “Traditional fans are wondering where this will all end. There’s likely to be even more disconnect between the fans and the ownership.”
Spirit of Shankly, one of the club’s prominent fan groups, also expressed concerns.
“We have witnessed similar sales at other clubs resulting in notable changes in the running of the club and football operations, leading to decisions and behaviours that many would not want to see at Liverpool.”
The group added: “It is vital for the game in general that football clubs are run sustainably, as LFC has been, and not an arms race funded by mega-rich individuals or state-backed entities.”
FSG also owns Major League Baseball team Boston Red Sox. The group brought Dynasty Equity into Liverpool as a minority investor in 2023.
