Colombia Earthquake Kills At Least 111 As 7.4-Magnitude Tremor Rocks Western Region

Colombia earthquake kills at least 111 people after a powerful 7.4 magnitude tremor struck western Colombia early Monday morning nationwide. Officials reported 87 injuries as rescue teams searched collapsed buildings across Pereira, Cali, Manizales, and surrounding communities for survivors today.

The United States Geological Survey located the epicenter near San José del Palmar, Chocó, at approximately 107 kilometers deep underground. Authorities said the powerful tremor spread across Colombia, with residents also feeling strong shaking in Venezuela, Ecuador, and Panama today.

President Abelardo De La Espriella declared a national emergency and directed government agencies to prioritize rescue operations and humanitarian assistance. Rescuers continue searching damaged structures because several residents remain trapped beneath rubble following widespread building collapses across affected cities nearby.

Meanwhile, officials reported serious damage to dozens of buildings, homes, roads, health centers, and community facilities across western Colombia today. Pereira and Cali suffered significant destruction, while airports in several cities suspended flights as inspectors checked facilities for structural damage.

The Colombia earthquake represents one of the country’s strongest seismic events in a decade, according to Colombian geological authorities recently. As rescue operations continue, authorities warn casualty figures could change while emergency teams work to locate survivors and provide assistance.
