Lionel Messi has plunged into mourning following the death of his father and longtime agent, Jorge Messi, who died aged 68 on Friday, August 7, 2026, in Rosario, Argentina.
Argentine media outlets Infobae and Rosario3 were first to report that Jorge died at approximately 10 p.m. local time in a Rosario hospital. Lionel Messi’s boyhood club, Newell’s Old Boys, subsequently confirmed his death with a tribute on X.
The club wrote: “Club Atlético Newell’s Old Boys bids farewell with deep sorrow and grief to Jorge Messi, who passed away at the age of 68 in the city of Rosario.
“Recognised leproso fan, businessman, and father of the Argentine national team captain, Lionel Andrés Messi.
“Jorge was the pillar and the person who supported with vision, rigor, and affection the career of the greatest player of all time alongside his wife, Celia Cuccittini.
“His constant companionship and behind-the-scenes leadership were essential in backing every step of Lionel, from his beginnings at Malvinas to the pinnacle of world football glory.
“Thank you for teaching him to love these colours. Farewell forever, leproso.”
Was Messi’s Father Sick?
Jorge had reportedly been living with a serious chronic illness for an extended period. Reports indicated a complex heart and neurological condition, although the family never publicly confirmed an official diagnosis.
In June, the Messi family confirmed that Jorge was under “strict medical supervision” and asked the media and public to respect their privacy after false reports of his death circulated online.
His condition also appeared to weigh heavily on Lionel during the 2026 World Cup, with the Argentina captain visibly emotional at times and acknowledging that his family was going through a difficult period. Jorge was absent from the stands throughout the tournament because of his health.
In late July, Messi skipped the MLS All-Star Game and travelled to Argentina to spend time with his father.
Jorge Messi’s Role in Lionel’s Career
Jorge supported Lionel from childhood in Rosario and accompanied him to Barcelona, helping navigate the treatment required for his growth hormone deficiency.
He later became Lionel’s agent and business adviser, overseeing his contracts and commercial interests while maintaining a relatively low public profile.
Jorge is survived by his wife, Celia Cuccittini, sons Lionel, Rodrigo and Matías, daughter María Sol, and several grandchildren.
