Oyo School Abduction: How 46 Victims Spent 56 Days in Captivity Before Rescue

The Oyo school abduction ended after 56 days when security agencies rescued all kidnapped pupils and teachers from captivity. The Oyo school abduction became one of Nigeria’s most disturbing kidnapping cases, triggering nationwide outrage, protests and repeated rescue appeals.

Armed attackers stormed three schools in Oriire Local Government Area on May 15, 2026, abducting 39 pupils, including a toddler, and seven teachers. The gunmen killed one teacher during the attack before later beheading another victim, Michael Oyedokun, in a disturbing video.

Kidnappers released emotional videos showing principal Mrs. Rachael Folawe Alamu pleading with President Bola Tinubu and Governor Seyi Makinde for negotiations. She later clarified the abductors demanded the release of detained Ansaru and Boko Haram-linked commanders, rejecting rumors about Sharia demands and a ‘₦1 billion ransom’

.President Tinubu condemned the attack and ordered intensified rescue operations while deploying senior security officials to coordinate emergency response efforts. Authorities also approved 1,000 forest guards for Oyo State as pressure mounted to secure the victims’ freedom.

Meanwhile, the Nigeria Union of Teachers declared and later suspended industrial action while protests spread across several communities demanding immediate intervention. Political tensions also grew after Labour Party leader Peter Obi criticized the Federal Government’s handling of the prolonged kidnapping crisis.

Security forces eventually surrounded the kidnappers’ hideout inside Old Oyo National Park during the final phase of rescue operations. Defence Minister, General Christopher Musa disclosed that the gunmen threatened to kill every captive if troops advanced closer toward their location.

Bayo Onanuga announced the successful rescue on July 10, confirming security agencies freed every victim without any prisoner exchange or ransom payment. Authorities also arrested eight suspects while neutralizing several others during the operation that ended the weeks-long ordeal.

The Oyo school abduction has renewed concerns about kidnapping, school security and banditry across Nigeria. Families now celebrate the victims’ return while survivors begin recovering from one of the country’s longest recent school abduction ordeals.
