A Play Based on a Key Moment in English History
55 Days tells the story of a major political crisis in England in 1648. The army occupied London after Parliament voted against putting the imprisoned king on trial.
The decision sparked a rebellion against Westminster and led to a coup. Historians regard the events of the next 55 days as important in shaping the modern English state.
Howard Brenton wrote the play, which explores a period during the English Civil War when influential figures tried to create a nation without a monarch.
The play first opened at Hampstead Theatre in London in October 2012. Howard Davies directed the original production.
