Grace Bassey, the Nollywood actress turned United States Navy officer, has announced her engagement, marking another milestone after leaving the Nigerian film industry to pursue a military career in America.

The actress shared the news in a Facebook post on Tuesday, posting photos of herself with her fiancé while showing off her engagement ring. Although she did not reveal his identity or share details of the proposal, she expressed joy over the new chapter in her life.

“Answered prayers,” she said.

“It feels like a dream, but when true love finds you, you melt.”

The engagement comes months after Bassey, formerly known as Belinda Effah, made headlines for graduating from the United States Navy boot camp and becoming a US citizen after taking the oath of allegiance.

She dedicated the achievement to her late father, Asido Bassey Effah, a retired naval commander.

Bassey left Nollywood in 2025, explaining that she was no longer finding fulfilment in acting. She said joining the US Navy had been a lifelong dream, inspired by her upbringing in a military family and her education at the Nigerian Navy Secondary School in Port Harcourt.

She made her Nollywood debut in the 2005 television series Shallow Waters before taking a break to compete in the reality show Next Movie Star. During her acting career, she won several accolades, including the Most Promising Act of the Year award at the 9th Africa Movie Academy Awards.

In 2021, the actress announced that she had changed her name from Belinda to Grace-Charis after what she described as a divine encounter, saying the meaning of her former name influenced her decision.
