After leaving Arista, Davis started J Records. The label introduced singer-songwriter Alicia Keys, who went on to become one of the industry’s biggest stars.
Many people in the music industry knew Davis simply by his first name because of his lasting influence and reputation.
Outside the recording studio, Davis hosted a star-studded Grammy Week party every year. The event featured performances by top artists and became one of the music industry’s most popular gatherings. The Recording Academy recognised it as an official Grammy Week event in 2009.
Davis died on Monday at the age of 94. The artists expected at his funeral reflect the deep impact he had on generations of musicians and the lasting legacy he leaves behind.
