‘Toy Story 5’ soars to $71 million on opening day, as it takes an early lead and sets up a massive weekend performance.
Disney and Pixar’s “Toy Story 5” led the box office on Friday. It earned $71 million from 4,425 North American theatres. As a result, the film is on track for a huge opening weekend. Early forecasts place its total between $150 million and $175 million. Even at the low end, it will break the franchise record. “Toy Story 4” currently holds that record with $120 million.
The film follows Buzz, Woody, and Jessie. This time, they face an edutainment smart tablet named Lilypad. The device threatens to take over playtime with Bonnie. The voice cast includes Tom Hanks, Tim Allen, and Joan Cusack. In addition, Greta Lee, Keanu Reeves, Craig Robinson, Alan Cumming, Conan O’Brien, and Bad Bunny join the franchise.
Meanwhile, “Disclosure Day” took second place. It earned $4.9 million on Friday. However, it is expected to drop 61% in its second weekend. Still, it should reach $17.2 million by Sunday. That will push its domestic total to $78.4 million.
In third place, “Obsession” continued its strong run. It made $4.7 million on Friday. Therefore, it is heading toward a $14 million weekend. So far, it has earned about $215 million domestically.
“Backrooms” placed fourth with $2.4 million on Friday. It should reach $7.4 million over the weekend. “Scary Movie” followed in fifth place. It earned $2.1 million and is heading toward $6.6 million.
However, “The Death of Robin Hood” struggled. It landed in eighth place with about $2.5 million projected for the weekend.
