Hip-Hop Stars Turn Knicks Victory Parade Into a Moving Concert

Fat Joe, Mary J. Blige, Wu-Tang Clan members and other hip-hop stars turned the New York Knicks’ victory parade into a moving concert. Their tag-team performance thrilled more than a million fans in Manhattan.

The Knicks celebrated their first NBA championship in 53 years with a ticker-tape parade through the Canyon of Heroes. Team stars Jalen Brunson, OG Anunoby, Karl-Anthony Towns, and Josh Hart joined the event. Celebrities including Chris Rock, Spike Lee and Timothée Chalamet also took part.

Fat Joe brought an all-star group featuring Mary J. Blige, Havoc of Mobb Deep, Remy Ma, Jadakiss and The Lox, Ja Rule, Yung Miami and members of the Wu-Tang Clan. Together, they delivered about 90 minutes of music from a parade float.

“We had three hours’ worth of songs,” said DJ Ted Smooth, who coordinated the performances. “Of course, we couldn’t get to all of them, but we were ready for everything.”

The set featured Yung Miami’s “Spend Dat,” Mary J. Blige’s “Real Love,” The Lox’s “Mighty D-Block (2-Guns Up)” and Remy Ma’s “Conceited.”

“It was like a dope ass live mixtape,” Smooth said. “I treated it like that, played their records, two verses, next record. I was going round-robin.”

Fat Joe said the title win was a special moment for him.

“It meant everything to me to watch the Knicks win the championship,” Joe told Variety. “I’ve been going to games since I was a kid sitting in the nosebleeds, so it still feels like a dream to have been part of this ride.”

Wu-Tang Clan’s Method Man also praised the connection between basketball and hip-hop.

“Basketball has been synonymous with hip-hop for a long time,” he said
