Fans of the purple dragon have something new to look forward to. “Spyro: A Realm Beyond,” the first new Spyro game in nearly 20 years, will launch in spring 2027.
The game is being developed by Toys for Bob in partnership with Microsoft’s Activision. It will also see Tom Kenny return as the voice of Spyro.
A New Adventure for Spyro
Toys for Bob described the title as “a completely original adventure featuring a brand new world, expanded exploration and new gameplay that evolves the classic experience in exciting ways.”
The studio said the game is designed for both longtime fans and new players.
“Built to welcome a new generation while giving longtime fans something entirely fresh, ‘Spyro: A Realm Beyond‘ invites players to explore, discover, and take flight like never before. That’s right; not gliding, not a limited set of flight levels. True dragon flight.”
Why Dragon Flight Became the Focus
Associate creative director Lou Studdert said the team spent time studying what made the Spyro franchise special before creating the new game.
“One of the things that we love to do when working on a franchise, be it Crash Bandicoot or Spyro, is we dive headfirst into figuring out what makes that franchise, that character tick,” Studdert told Variety.
The developer explained that this process led to the new dragon-flight feature.
“That’s been the focus for ‘Beyond,’ and that’s why we landed on dragon play. We figured, hey, these are all these disparate elements, and we want to unify that into the base core kit of our playable character. And then from there, what does that actually mean, and how do we then amplify that into the gameplay?”
Fans Finally Get Their Wish
The announcement ends years of speculation about a new Spyro title.
Toys for Bob, chief creative officer and studio head, Paul Yan, said the studio has always paid attention to fan feedback.
“One of the things that we love about Spyro and this franchise is that the fan base is very vocal about what they love.”
He added, “So that’s another part of the excitement: finally being able to confirm to them that, yes, we hear you.”
