The Jigawa State Government has received official approval from the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria to begin the installation of cargo facilities at Dutse International Airport, marking a significant step in the stateโs push to expand its aviation and trade capacity.
The approval clears the way for the development of dedicated cargo infrastructure at the airport, which is expected to strengthen agricultural exports, boost commercial activities and create new economic opportunities within Jigawa State and the wider North West region.
State officials confirmed that the cargo facility project aligns with the governmentโs strategy to position Dutse International Airport as a logistics hub for agribusiness and industrial goods.

Jigawa State is widely known for its agricultural output, including rice, sesame seeds, hibiscus and livestock. With the installation of cargo facilities, producers will have improved access to air freight services, reducing post harvest losses and improving turnaround time for exports.
The new cargo operations are expected to support both domestic and international shipments, giving local farmers and businesses a more efficient route to markets across Nigeria and beyond.
Industry stakeholders have long advocated for functional cargo terminals in northern airports to reduce dependence on major hubs such as Lagos and Abuja. The development at Dutse International Airport is seen as a move toward decentralising logistics infrastructure and promoting regional economic growth.
Officials familiar with the project said the facility will include storage areas, handling equipment and logistics support services necessary for standard cargo operations.
The FAAN approval signals federal backing for the stateโs aviation development plans. Analysts say the move could attract private sector investment into cold chain logistics, warehousing and export processing activities around the airport corridor.
In addition to supporting agriculture, the cargo facility is expected to stimulate small and medium scale enterprises, generate employment and enhance revenue for the state.
Dutse International Airport has primarily handled limited passenger operations in recent years. The introduction of cargo services is anticipated to increase overall airport activity and improve its commercial viability.
Aviation experts note that cargo infrastructure plays a critical role in modern airport economics, often providing steady revenue streams even when passenger traffic fluctuates.
While timelines for completion and operational launch have not been publicly disclosed, groundwork preparations are expected to begin following the regulatory clearance from FAAN.
The approval represents a milestone in Jigawa Stateโs infrastructure expansion drive, with the cargo facility project positioned as a key component of the stateโs long term economic development agenda.
