As popular streamer IShowSpeed continues his highly publicized tour across Africa, his recent stop in the Republic of Benin has stirred up debates especially in Nigeria.
After visiting Lagos, Nigeria, the YouTube star moved on to Benin Republic, where videos of his experience quickly went viral. From traditional cultural dances and masquerade displays to historic sites and local cuisine, Benin appeared intentional in showcasing the richness of its culture.
These viral moments caught the attention of Nigerian writer and commentator, Solomon Buchi, who publicly praised the Benin Tourism Agency for how well they curated the experience for the streamer.
According to Buchi, Benin “clearly understood the assignment” by ensuring IShowSpeed experienced the depth of their cultural heritage, food, history, and tourist attractions. He noted that watching the videos opened his eyes to how culturally rich Benin Republic truly is.
However, Buchi did not hold back when addressing how IShowSpeed’s Nigerian visit was handled. In a strongly worded post that has since circulated widely, Buchi criticized the organizers of the Nigerian leg of the trip, stating that they failed to properly showcase Nigeria’s vast cultural and natural wealth. From beaches and caves to historic sites, festivals, resorts, and reserves, Buchi argued that Nigeria had far more to offer than what was presented.

He went further to suggest that IShowSpeed’s experience in Nigeria could have been significantly better if intentional creators were involved. Buchi mentioned travel filmmaker Tayo Aina as a potential guide, food creator Opeyemi for proper restaurant experiences, and lifestyle influencer Enioluwa for introducing the streamer to authentic Nigerian cultural meals. In his view, these creators could have helped present a more accurate and dignified image of Nigerian culture to a global audience.
The comment section following Buchi’s post reflected mixed opinions. While many agreed with his perspective, others suggested additional creators and influencers who could have done a great job, including Tobe, who some felt could have taken IShowSpeed around Northern Nigeria to experience its unique heritage.
Buchi also addressed critics who questioned the importance of the publicity. He emphasized that IShowSpeed is one of the most famous internet personalities in the world, and moments like these shape first impressions. According to him, global coverage matters, especially when it comes to how a country is perceived culturally.
IShowSpeed’s Benin experience has reignited conversations about tourism, cultural representation, and intentional storytelling in Nigeria and many believe it’s a conversation long overdue.
