Super Eagles Maintain Perfect AFCON Third-Place Record After Penalty Victory Over Egypt

Nigeria’s Super Eagles once again proved their dominance in Africa Cup of Nations third-place matches, defeating Egypt 4–2 on penalties to secure the bronze medal and maintain a flawless record at this stage of the tournament.

The match took place on Saturday, January 17, 2026, with kickoff at 5:00 PM WAT. After 90 minutes of intense, tightly contested football ended in a goalless draw, the encounter was decided by a penalty shootout—where Nigeria showed superior composure and mental strength.

As expected from two African football heavyweights, the game delivered tension, discipline, and drama. Both teams created moments, but clear chances were few and far between, with defences standing firm throughout regulation time. With no breakthrough in open play, penalties became the ultimate decider.

The shootout opened with a moment of tension for Nigeria as Dele Bashiru’s effort was saved by the Egyptian goalkeeper, briefly swinging momentum Egypt’s way. However, that was as far as Egypt’s advantage went.

Akor Adams responded confidently, converting Nigeria’s next penalty to steady nerves. Moses Simon followed with another well-taken kick, keeping the Super Eagles firmly in control. Egypt, however, struggled under pressure.

Goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali rose to the occasion, producing two crucial penalty saves that shifted the balance decisively in Nigeria’s favour. His calm, commanding presence between the posts proved pivotal and underlined his growing importance to the national team.

Alex Iwobi stepped up next and made no mistake from the spot, extending Nigeria’s lead. Then came the defining moment of the night—Ademola Lookman calmly slotted home Nigeria’s fifth and final penalty, sealing the 4–2 shootout victory and igniting celebrations among players and fans alike.

Beyond the immediate result, the victory further cements Nigeria’s unique place in AFCON history. The Super Eagles now boast a perfect record in third-place matches, having won every bronze-medal playoff they have contested. It is a testament to their consistency, resilience, and ability to finish tournaments strongly.

While some teams struggle to recover after semifinal disappointment, Nigeria continues to respond with professionalism and pride. The win over Egypt reinforces the Super Eagles’ reputation as serial performers on the continental stage.

Although lifting the AFCON trophy remains the ultimate ambition, securing third place is far from insignificant. For Nigeria, it represents another continental medal, renewed confidence, and a clear sign of squad stability.

The match highlighted the team’s balance—from defensive discipline to mental toughness during penalties—qualities that will be vital in future competitions, including World Cup qualifiers and upcoming AFCON tournaments.

Once again, the Super Eagles have reminded Africa of a simple truth: when it comes to AFCON third-place matches, Nigeria simply does not lose.

Congratulations to Nigeria!
