The Oregun community has announced a mandatory lock-in and strict night curfew for the upcoming 2025/2026 Egungun Festival. The directive, issued by the Olu of Oregun, requires all residents, including indigenes and non-indigenes, to remain indoors from 10:00 PM on Thursday, November 27 until 4:00 AM on Friday, November 28.
The traditional Egungun Festival, one of the most significant cultural events in Oregun, involves sacred rites performed by masquerades known as Agan. During this period, the community emphasizes spiritual respect and safety, urging residents to strictly follow the instructions. The leadership has stressed that all lights must be switched off by 10:00 PM to allow the Agan to move freely through the town as part of the sacred midnight rituals.

Security Measures and Enforcement
To ensure the safety of both residents and participants, the Nigeria Police Force will be fully deployed across Oregun during the festival. Authorities have made it clear that any violation of the lock-in or curfew will attract immediate consequences. Community leaders are urging compliance without exception, highlighting that the curfew is both a cultural and security requirement.
The Olu of Oregun spoke on the significance of the festival, saying the Egungun rites are essential for maintaining spiritual balance in the community and preserving local traditions. He urged residents to cooperate fully with festival guidelines to ensure that the sacred ceremonies are performed smoothly and safely.
Cultural Importance of the Egungun Festival
The Egungun Festival is a centuries-old tradition celebrated in Oregun and other parts of Lagos State. It honors ancestral spirits and serves as a reminder of the communityโs heritage. The masquerades, known as Agan, perform intricate dances and rituals at night to symbolize the presence of ancestors among the living.

Observers note that such festivals are not only spiritual events but also opportunities to unite the community, reinforce cultural identity, and educate younger generations about traditional practices. While the festival attracts many onlookers, safety measures like the mandatory lock-in ensure that the sacred rites are respected and that there is minimal disruption during the ceremonial activities.
Residents React to Lock-In and Curfew
The announcement has elicited mixed reactions among residents. Many indigenes have expressed their understanding of the curfew, emphasizing the importance of respecting tradition. Social media posts from Oregun residents show that some are already preparing by ensuring they have essentials and arranging for families to stay indoors safely during the specified hours.
Some non-indigenes have raised questions about accessibility, particularly for visitors unfamiliar with local customs. However, community leaders have assured everyone that enforcement is primarily for safety and cultural preservation, stressing that compliance will benefit both locals and visitors.
Businesses and local vendors have also been informed in advance, with temporary adjustments made to operating hours to avoid conflicts with the curfew. Health and emergency services are reportedly on alert to respond to any issues during the festival, ensuring that residents can observe the event safely.
