Other industry figures have also paid tribute to the late performer. Renowned event curator Funke Bucknor-Obruthe shared a touching post alongside a photo of Shuga performing on stage. “What a class act. What a legacy. You brought live music to life. Thank you for the memories,” she wrote.

Singer and performer Tosin Martins described Akiin Shuga’s passing as “a monumental loss to the Nigerian live-band scene,” noting how his work ethic and mentorship influenced younger musicians. The Association of Music Band Owners of Nigeria (AMBON), which Shuga founded, released an emotional statement calling him “a leader and teacher whose sound and discipline changed our industry forever.”

Social media platforms have since been filled with old clips and photos of Shuga’s iconic performances at weddings, state events, and high-profile concerts. Fans have praised his charisma, humility, and his mission to elevate Nigeria’s live-band culture.

Honouring a Pioneer

Born Akinloye Tofowomo, Akiin Shuga overcame polio at age five to become one of Nigeria’s most respected live performers. Through his Shuga Band and the Shuga Limb Foundation, he promoted inclusivity and inspired people living with disabilities.

As tributes continue, plans are underway for a memorial concert to celebrate his life and legacy. His impact from the rhythm he created to the lives he touched remains deeply felt across the music industry.
