Teju Babyface Reflects on Life in America: “It Wasn’t What I Expected”

Popular comedian and television host Teju Babyface has opened up about his relocation to the United States, revealing that the move, which he once thought would be a smooth transition, turned out to be one of the hardest decisions of his life.

In a recent YouTube video, Teju shared that moving abroad had initially filled him with excitement and high expectations. He explained that he believed relocating with his family would mark the next big step in his career. However, things didn’t go as planned.

“When we left Nigeria, I was convinced it was the right move for our family. But after a few months, I started feeling like I had made a huge mistake,” he said.

The comedian noted that adjusting to life in America was not as glamorous as many people imagine. He described the early years as emotionally and mentally draining, especially with the unexpected challenges brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic.

According to him, “There were days I sat down and thought, ‘Why did I even come here?’ For about three years, I felt like I had shot myself in the foot. Everything slowed down.”

“It Taught Me More About Myself”

Despite the tough beginning, Teju said the experience has shaped his outlook on life and strengthened his faith. He explained that relocating forced him to slow down and rediscover gratitude in small things.

“I realised the grass is not always greener on the other side. Every place has its own set of problems. What matters most is how prepared you are for change,” he shared.

Teju also clarified that his move to the U.S. was not a random “japa” decision, but a structured relocation under an exceptional ability visa which was proof of his achievements in the entertainment industry.

Fans who watched the video responded with mixed emotions. Some admired his honesty about life abroad, while others teased him, writing, “But you still dey there!” — a playful take to how Nigerians react to people who complain about life overseas but remain abroad.

Today, Teju says he’s finally at peace with his decision. What started as regret has become a lesson in patience and personal growth.
