Today, October 20, 2025, Nigeria commemorates the fifth anniversary of the EndSARS movement, a protest that became one of the most defining moments in the nationโs democratic history. What started in October 2020 as an outcry against the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) grew into a global call for justice, human rights, and police reform.

Across Lagos, Abuja, and major cities, citizens, activists, and human rights organizations are holding memorial walks and exhibitions in honor of those who lost their lives during the protests. The Lekki Toll Gate in Lagos once again stands as a symbol of remembrance โ a site where protesters demanding an end to police brutality were allegedly shot by security forces on the night of October 20, 2020.
In Lagos, several youth groups gathered peacefully to reflect on the legacy of EndSARS and its impact on civic participation. Online, the hashtag #EndSARSAt5 has gained traction, with Nigerians sharing memories, photos, and personal reflections on how the movement inspired a renewed demand for accountability and justice.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu called for unity and dialogue, urging Lagosians to remember the lessons of the protests while focusing on peace and reform. However, some activists have expressed disappointment over what they describe as slow progress in achieving justice for victims of police brutality. Social advocates like Rinu Oduala and Aisha Yesufu have continued to use their platforms to highlight ongoing challenges and push for reform within the Nigerian Police Force.
The EndSARS movement marked a turning point for young Nigerians who mobilized across social media platforms to organize protests, raise funds, and amplify voices calling for change. It also redefined how digital activism and civic engagement operate in the country, proving the power of collective action and global solidarity.
Five years later, EndSARS remains more than a protest. It has become a lasting symbol of courage, resilience, and the unyielding demand for justice in Nigeriaโs democratic journey.
