Fela Kuti Exhibition “Afrobeat Rebellion” Opens In Lagos

The night air was charged in Lagos as Afrobeat Rebellion opened at the Ecobank Pan African Centre, casting new light on the life, music, and activism of Fela Kuti. This immersive exhibition pulls visitors into Fela’s world through archived photos, soundscapes, recreated stages, and personal items carefully curated to tell his story. Verified sources confirm the exhibition runs until December 28, 2025.

From his Lagos beginnings to the formation of the Kalakuta Republic, the display spans more than three dozen installations that highlight key chapters of Fela’s journey. Included are exhibits on his political struggles, public performances, marriages, and influence across continents. These come together in ten thematic zones: Lagos Life, Life on Tour, Queens of Fela, Global Afrobeat, among others.

The opening was marked by a stirring performance from Seun Kuti with his band, joined on stage by the UK’s Ezra Collective. The blend of live music and spoken word enabled attendees to feel Fela’s music in motion and not just see it preserved.

Curated by Papa Omotayo, working with Whitespace Creative Arts, the Lagos version builds on the original show in Paris at the Philharmonie de Paris. For Lagos, local archives and materials contribute to expanded narrative depth. There are mirrored rooms linking old and new Shrine spaces, sections devoted to Fela’s relationships, and special programs for workshops and talks.

Admission is free from Fridays to Sundays. Students, music lovers, and art enthusiasts also have access to guided tours and events. Verified reports say the exhibition will run daily except Mondays, giving people across Lagos plenty of time to visit.
